Carbohydrates: Friend or Foe?

Carbohydrates often get a bad reputation, but the truth is — they’re not the enemy. In fact, carbs are one of your body’s most important sources of energy and play a key role in keeping your brain and muscles functioning at their best.

Why We Need Carbs

Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred fuel source. They break down into glucose, which your brain and muscles use for energy throughout the day. Without enough carbs, you may feel sluggish, foggy, and less able to concentrate or perform physically.

Simple vs Complex Carbs

Not all carbs are created equal.

  • Simple carbohydrates (like sugar, lollies, soft drinks, white bread) are quickly digested and can cause rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar.

  • Complex carbohydrates (like wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, and legumes) provide steady energy, fibre, and valuable nutrients that support gut and metabolic health.

What Happens When We Eat More Than We Burn

If we consume more carbohydrates than our body needs — especially simple sugars — the excess glucose is stored as fat. Over time, consistently high carb intake can contribute to insulin resistance, weight gain, and inflammation, which may impact overall health and energy levels.

It’s Not About “Good” vs “Bad” Carbs

The key is timing and balance. Carbs aren’t “bad” — but how and when you eat them matters.

For example:

  • Higher-carb meals can work well around workouts or busy, active days.

  • Lower-carb options may be better when you’re less active or focusing on blood sugar

balance.

Tuning your carb intake to your lifestyle helps support steady energy, better mood, and long-term health.

Should I Swap to Artificial Sweeteners?

It might be tempting to cut sugar and switch to artificial sweeteners, but they’re not always the best solution. Some sweeteners can affect gut health and appetite regulation. If you’re craving something sweet, try naturally sweet foods like fruit, yoghurt, or a drizzle of honey — they come with nutrients your body can actually use.

Bottom line: Carbohydrates are an essential part of a balanced diet — it’s all about choosing wisely, eating mindfully and matching your intake to your activity levels.
